Steve Patton, Americas Mobility Sector Leader for EY, is well known in transportation circles. He started his career by applying his aerospace engineering degree to work on the Space Shuttle for NASA and on jet engines for GE.  For the last 30 years, he has been applying his skills as a consultant, 24 of those years with EY.  His clients are a Who’s Who of large and small companies.

In our conversation, Steve outlines EY's comprehensive services, which include consulting and transactions across various automotive segments such as passenger and commercial vehicles, suppliers, and retailers.  EY's focus on technology, particularly AI, autonomy, and the intersection of these technologies with other business processes and considerations, from regulation through tax.

Steve and I discuss key themes in sustainability, consumer demand for environmentally friendly vehicles, the role of regulations, and the evolving landscape of electric vehicles (EVs) and charging infrastructure.  We both believe that regarding sustainability, the industry has some self-sustaining momentum, regardless of regulatory waxing and waning.  Steve emphasizes the importance of consumer education and streamlined EV infrastructure for broader adoption.

Our conversation extends to the commercial sector, examining hydrogen fuel cells and autonomy in mining and warehouse applications.  We conclude with insights on the competitive pressures from global entrants, especially Chinese manufacturers with “lower content” vehicles, the evolution of vehicle features, and the future potential of connected and autonomous vehicles.
